Our 2010 Unicameral Candidates

We would like to welcome you to the 2010 campaign season! Nebraska Home Educator's PAC is getting organized and needs your help to support two candidates for the Unicameral.

Let's talk about why we should support candidates for the state legislature. Our organization was born in 2008 in response to LB1141, a bill that tried to put heavy restrictions upon home schooling families. The bill failed, but many of us observed that we had very few people in the Unicameral who understood home schooling. It is extremely difficult to break traditional education paradigms, as all of us have probably observed, and legislators tend to share those same paradigms. Our goal is to find solid candidates who understand homeschooling BEFORE they are elected and help them win their seats.

We have two excellent candidates, both of whom have met with us and have gratefully accepted our support. First, Jim Smith, from Papillion, is a respected community leader whose wife home schooled their children for a brief period. Second, Chad Wright, from northeast Lincoln, was home schooled from kindergarten through high school and recently graduated from UNL's law program. We cannot wait to introduce them to you!

Why should homeschoolers be involved in state politics?

If you are a news junkie, you see that the cable networks are inundated with stories about races for the US Congress and US Senate, important stories that have nationwide impact. As important as these stories can be, they often drown out important state elections, races that can have a huge impact upon our homeschool freedoms.

Although you may not ponder about homeschool freedoms daily, I would suggest you seriously consider the topic at least every two years, during the races for the Nebraska Unicameral. During these races we have unique opportunities to choose the voices within the Unicameral, voices that will have a profound impact upon many things, including the freedom to teach at home. These are times when we can pull together to ensure someone in that legislative body is watching out for us, allowing us to live out this calling.

1. Why was NHE-PAC founded?

NHE-PAC was founded in 2008 after a legislative "close call" in the Nebraska Unicameral, where the homeschool community successfully defeated LB1141, an attempt to place unacceptable burdens upon families who choose home education. Reflecting upon this experience, it was clear to us that Nebraska needed more senators who understand homeschooling.

2. What do we ask of our candidates?

Nothing. We ask for no benefits or special advantages. We feel that benefits from the state come with too many strings attached, strings that may require the state to dictate certain parts of a homeschool's operation. Simply put, we ask that our candidates ensure the state lets us do what we do best: teaching our kids.
